Near Dulles Airport, the Smithsonian has a second Air & Space museum, which is very well worth a visit.  There are many, many aircraft specimens, dating from the earliest days of flight.  Significant aircraft of all wars are on display, experimental, cargo, passenger, fixed wing, rotary wing, and even a space shuttle and an SR-71 Blackbird.
