American Cemetery and Memorial |
No place in the Philippines is more important for Americans to visit than the American Cemetery and Memorial, where more than 17,000 US military personnel killed in Southeast Asia during WWII are buried. The memorial walls are engraved with the names of over 36,000 personnel who are missing in action. The grounds are impeccably manicured and cared for by the American Battle Monuments Commission, which also oversees the management of 23 other American cemeteries in foreign countries. The Philippine cemetery is the largest of all.
The memorial has the seals of all WWII era US states and territories engraved in the floor.
There are a total of 25 mosaic maps throughout the memorial depicting WWII military operations.
